Protection Magic Basics
December 18, 2020Merry Meet, I am so glad you are here. Today I will give you a lovely reference for protection magic. The basics if you will. I may disappoint some of you but that is why I am being up front now before you get too far into the article and go "where is it?" I am NOT going to give you a protection spell. But I will help you craft your own.
The Onyx Witch is a member of the Amazon Affiliate program. If we link to any product on Amazon, you should assume that it is an affiliate product and we might get paid a small commission when you make a purchase. This enables us to be able to afford a domain name and hosting as well as spend more time creating content for you and less time at our "day job."
I mean honestly, even if I did just hand something generic to you, it would not do you any good. The power comes from within knowing yourself and detailing it to your specific needs. Ask yourself these three basic questions, pair their answers with the information from the upcoming section and you will only need your own words to chant in order to create the perfect spell for you.
- Are you needing protection from something physical?
- Are you needing protection from something emotional, physiological or psychic?
- Are you wanting protection in anticipation of something or from something happening again?
Once you have the answers to these questions, finding the ingredients for your spell become very simple.
For example, if you want to protect yourself from being emotionally abused - let's say your parent is a narcissist. You will want to carry around a different set of stones or talisman's than if you were just feeling emotionally drained but can't figure out why.
Pro tip: Always check to see what planet is in retrograde or if there are any major celestial events coming up. Those often effect people who are more self-aware just a tiny bit more than the blessed ignorant.

Stones
This is my favorite section. I could spend all day telling you about rocks. Instead, I will help you focus on what specifically you need protection from.
- Black Onyx - My favorite stone (as you could tell by the blog name right?). I am constantly wearing it, as you should when you use Onyx - the longer it stays in contact with your skin, the more powerful and attuned to you it becomes. It helps fortify your psychic self from being drained of energy (think energy vampires) and it also absorbs and transmutes negative energy. It also helps to make you feel grounded. As someone who deals with mental illness, whenever someone asks me how they can keep some self control and not let their emotions get the best of them, this is the protection stone I offer them. Quite literally helps protect you from yourself when you are being your own worst enemy. Love, love, love it! *also comes in banded, white or green and those have different properties.
- Jet - Great stone for empaths, helps absorb emotions, particularly negative ones. If your jet breaks, it did its job. Daily cleaning (sometimes more often than that depending on who you've been around) will prevent that.
- Labradorite - helps aid in defense of a psychic attack.
- Black Tourmaline - Helps ward off negative energies that are being sent to you unintentionally. Great daily wear. *Do keep in mind there are other colors and variations including black rutilated quartz (basically it is clear quartz with black tourmaline shards in it) that can also be useful but for something different.
- Black Obsidian - Also used in banishment it is one of the strongest protection stones. It aids in riding hexes and curses (which means it protects against them too) and can also return any energy back to the sender. *Snowflake obsidian could be used in place of black onyx for mental health protection.
Black Tourmaline and Black Obsidian are PERFECT examples of why it is important to answer the questions above. Black Tourmaline helps with protection against someone who might be sending you bad vibes without knowing it, where as if you know someone is trying to curse you, you want Obsidian all the way.
I have so many books on crystals, gemstones and rocks that it is ridiculous. I will recommend one above them all and it is The Crystal Bible by Judy Hall (Buy it on Amazon via our affiliate link). It is one of my favorites and it has a 5 star rating on Amazon.
Herbs
This used to be my least knowledgeable section. My mother was always more into herbs than I am. She tried to have a green thumb but I used to make fun of her and tell her any time we passed something she wanted that the flower/plant didn't do anything bad and so there was no reason to bring it to our porch just to die. I know my strengths and weaknesses and choose to let the plants live.
- Angelica -Very powerful protection herb as it protects against negative energy and attracts positive energy; creates a barrier against negative energy. Use in healing & exorcism incenses; scatter for purification, protection, and uncrossing. Add to incense to promote healing or to the bath to remove curses, hexes, or spells. Sprinkle ground herb in the shoes to prevent tiredness and weakness. Sprinkle around the outside perimeter of the home for protection and exorcism.
- Bay Leaf - Place in the corner of each room in the house to protect all that dwell there. Carry bay leaf to protect yourself against hexes & curses.
- Cloves - Cloves are burned to stop gossip as well as to purify & raise the spiritual vibrations of an area. Use to bring a sense of kinship to a social gathering. Wear for protection and mental clarity. Said to protect babies in their cribs if strung together and hung over the crib (being sure that the strand can't fall into the crib, of course!). Burn to drive away hostile forces, and stop any gossip about you. Carry to bring comfort during bereavement. Cleanses the aura.
- Heather - Carry in sachets or charms to protect against rape and other violent crimes. Hang or use in home decorations to promote peace.
- Peony - Protection from hexes and jinxes. Hang in the home or car for protection. Warning: While the flowers & petals have the positive qualities listed, the seed is called 'Jumby Bean' and is known for promoting dissension and strife.
For more information please check out our Herb page. For your own personal library I highly recommend Scott Cunningham's (Buy it on Amazon via our affiliate link). It gives illustrations of the plants (which I photocopied for my own Book of Shadows) and it super helpful in identifying them.
Deities
This can be VERY hard to pin down. Depending on your source, you might get very conflicting reports about who does what. Some will tell you "you shouldn't call on a deity unless they come to you" and that's all well and good, except they are a God. They don't really give two shits about you so the only way you'll ever commune with them is if you seek them out. For this I will simply give you a few I have called upon in my time of need and what I offered in exchange. It will be up to you to do your own research and figure out the rest.
- Hecate - (pronounced like hey-caught-A) She is a very popular Goddess, since she is known for being the Greek Goddess of Witchcraft. She is very found of dogs. Offerings of Belladonna, Oak, Yew and Garlic are seen as favorable to her.
- Ganesha - Touted as the Hindu god of travel. Many believers hang his portrait in their cars as protection while traveling. He is whom I would invoke if you are wanting to protect yourself during a long drive, a transatlantic flight, etc. He likes traditional Indian sweets such as Laddu and modaks and bananas. I offered banana taffy since I am not familiar with Indian cusine at all (i and it worked just fine.
- Freya - Another popular Goddess this time of Nordic origin. Even though she is known as a Goddess of love & fertility, she also presides over the realm Folkvang, whose inhabitants she selects from among slain warriors. A very powerful Goddess if you want protection and I recommend leaving mead, honey or meat. She is often depicted as riding in a Chariot pulled by cats - so herbs associated with cats (i.e: catnip) are also favorable.
- Odin - I am very particular to Odin as he is one of the few male deities I truly adore. He sacrificed his own eye to gain knowledge, which if you haven't gathered, carries a lot of weight with me. Odin is often accompanied by two ravens, Huginn and Muninn (tricksters the both of them), along with the wolves Geri and Freki (whom you cannot lie to) and his eight-legged horse, Sleipnir. Tributes of buckeye, mustard seed and ash key are often looked upon favorably.
- Athena - Probably the most notable of the Protection Goddesses on this list, she has always been associated with warfare and owls. This has been my main deity through most of my practice. In working with her, I cannot give you specifics because she is particularly choosy and what worked for me will most certainly not work for you. It will be one of those "I've seen this before, what else do you have?" and you can lose her favor rather than gain it. She is not an enemy you want to make. Since she also deals with creativity, be clever in how you attempt to win her favor. Think Odysseus outsmarting the Cyclops in the Iliad for inspiration.
There are so many more mythologies that I am unfamiliar with, but you might have more knowledge of and of course it depends on why you are seeking protection. If you're seeking protection from being kidnapped, taken advantage of, etc Persephone or her mother Demeter are ones to consider. If you are wanting to protect yourself from illness then a God or Goddess associated with health might be better. If you do not believe in a God/Goddess at all (which I would say you're non-secular) then you can skip this all together.
Sigils / Symbols
This is probably your best bet at being covert in crafting a way to protect yourself without others knowing what you are doing. This is particularly favorable if you are "in the broom closet" as they say. Basically, if you don't want people to know or haven't told people I AM A FREAKING WITCH, DEAL WITH IT.
Sigils are VERY easy to make. Your most basic one that literally ANYONE can draw? The Algiz rune from norse mythology. You will draw a "Y" then you will add a 3rd little stick in between the 2 branches of the Y. So it looks like:
The cross that most Christians wear? That's both a symbol and a sigil. It helps protect them. Want double protection? Draw a shield, then draw the algiz rune on the shield.
A little more difficult is crafting your own. I like to use vellum and I have a personal "sigil" book that I will share much later on in a more in depth look at sigils for protection. For now here is an easy chart to use. Be gentle, I'm no graphic designer.
You can place these anywhere. You can draw them on your skin with pens or sharpie. You can draw them on pieces of paper and hide them in your shoe, under your pillow, in between your phone and its case, slip it into the glove box of your car, paint it with invisible ink on the wall of your room - I could go on forever.
❤
I only listed a few of each, but you must understand that there is so much more information available. So many more herbs and stones, but we would be here all day and that would create so many more questions that I couldn't possibly foresee to answer. I ALWAYS encourage you to seek more knowledge and question everything.
"But what about the chant or actual spell? What do I say? What do I do?"
My dear, that is the most exciting part of witchcraft. No one can tell you what to do, or that what you are doing is wrong. It is something you have to feel out and discover for yourself. If your chant is simply "I am safe. I am protected" then that's it. And it's a pretty good one. I use it often. Mainly while driving at night and I see "deer butts" as I call them. You know, deer's who want to cross the road, see you coming and go "oh crap" and turn tail and run? Yup, deer butts!
You can wear the stones as jewelry, keep them in your pocket or in a pouch (the Native American "Medicine bag" is very common in most occult shops, though I would be wary of cultural appropriation). Wearing herbs is not usually very easy to do, however you could keep them in a sealable tea bag or pouch and I gave plenty of ways for you to keep sigils about you.
This was SO MUCH. Thank you for sticking it out with me. I will definitely go more in depth on each of these I promise but this was just the basics to get your feet wet.
Please leave all comments below as far as what worked, what was confusing and any feedback you may have. It will help me improve and shape the blog going farther.

Hey! I came across your post on SoM in the newbie section where you were talking about spell casting. I saw you mentioned you would be happy to give guidance. I am new to all of this but my fiance and I would really like to start learning. I know you recommended learning for a while before practicing and I was hoping you might point me in the right direction for some reading that could introduce us.
ReplyDeleteI am 32, a female in the LA area and I have a disorder called Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. I was especially interested in your writing about protection from illness. From your experience is this used to protect against new illness or can it be used for existing? I've been diagnosed for 12 years now. I have worked hard to get far in my pain management journey. I have been in a wheelchair 8 years but I am walking again at home. But it has no known medical cure and always has the possibility of getting worse or spreading. I don't know where this journey is taking me but I know I can't ignore the breadcrumbs I am finding. I really was excited to see from your Crafty Witch blog that you were transitioning to focus more on self care magic and that really peaked my interest. Thank you for your willingness to spread what you have worked so hard to learn.
